Born and raised in South Africa, Daniel Zimbler is a graduate of Columbia University's M.F.A. film program in screenwriting and directing, where he received top honours. He is Head Writer on Mzansi Magic/MNET’s popular telenovela “IsiThembiso" (‘Best Writing’ SAFTA 2019, now into a third season) where he has overseen a twelve-strong writing team produce more than 400 half-hour episodes. He is currently writing the forthcoming historical drama series, SHAKA ZULU for MNET, about the birth of the Zulu nation. He wrote the 2019 ‘Best Comedy’ SAFTA-winning 8-part comedy series "Tali's Wedding Diary" for Showmax with the creators of SA Youtube sensation Suzelle DIY. His feature documentary debut, GOLDBLATT, about the eminent South African photographer David Goldblatt, headlined Paris Photo 2018, London Photo 2019, and was nominated in the Best Documentary and Best Directing categories at the SAFTAs. Zimbler directed the TV comedy series “Those Who Can’t” for SABC 3 (SAFTA nominated Best Director). He’s directed commercials for brands including Santam, Virgin Active; he's twice directed theatre productions Off-Broadway (NY); his short films have played at numerous international festivals and featured on Short of the Week; and he co-created, wrote and directed the award-winning IFP (NY) web series UNDERSTUDIES starring comedy Richard Kind and David Rasche for Daily Motion. His previous work includes human rights research at the Cape Town think-tank, the Centre for Conflict Resolution. He holds a BA Honours degree in Archaeology & Anthropology from Oxford University, UK.
