Born and raised in South Africa, Daniel Zimbler is a graduate of Columbia University's M.F.A. film program in screenwriting and directing, where he received top honours. He is Head Writer on Mzansi Magic/MNET’s popular telenovela “IsiThembiso" (SAFTA 2018 award-winning, 2019 nominated, and into a third season) where he has overseen a twelve-strong writing team produce more than 400 half-hour episodes. He wrote the first Showmax original 8-part half hour comedy series "Tali's Wedding Diary" with the creators of SA Youtube sensation Suzelle DIY. He is currently in development for the second season, as well as a feature project with the Suzelle DIY team. Zimbler directed the TV comedy series “Those Who Can’t” for SABC 3, for which he was twice nominated for a SAFTA in 2016 and 2017. His feature documentary debut, GOLDBLATT, about the eminent South African photographer David Goldblatt, premiered at Encounters and Durban International Film Festival, and has been nominated in the Best Documentary and Best Directing categories at the 2019 SAFTAs. He’s directed commercials for brands such as Santam, Virgin Active; has had two award-winning short films on Short of the Week; twice directed theatre productions Off-Broadway (NY); and co-created, wrote and directed the award-winning IFP-backed web series UNDERSTUDIES starring comedy legends Richard Kind and David Rasche, which launched on Daily Motion with over 200K views. His previous work includes human rights research at the Cape Town think-tank, the Centre for Conflict Resolution.
