Born and raised in South Africa, Daniel Zimbler is a writer-director working in comedy and drama. After starting out as a political and human rights analyst, Zimbler moved to New York to embark upon his MFA in film directing at Columbia University, where he stayed on to teach undergraduate directing.
Zimbler's short films have won on the international festival circuit, and have twice been selected by the prestigious Short of the Week. He has worked with a number of celebrated artists in the process: from legendary British actor Julian Glover (Game of Thrones, The Empire Strikes Back) to Tony-winner Elizabeth Ashley.
With a background in theatre, Zimbler has directed productions Off-Broadway and beyond. His short-form work has been seen by millions of eyes on the Nasdaq and Thomson-Reuters mega-screens at Times Square in Manhattan, and on a multitude of mini-screens at Apple's flagship store in New York.
His Broadway comedy web-series creation UNDERSTUDIES starring Richard Kind (Curb Your Enthusiasm, A Serious Man), David Rasche (Veep, Bored to Death), Tony-nominee Alison Fraser, among others, was selected by IFP for the Emerging Storytellers Program at Independent Film Week 2014. The series went on to win the Best Acting category at ITVFest 2014, in the build up to its official release online. Zimbler directed the second season of “Those Who Can't”, a half-hour comedy series for the South African national broadcaster (SABC) which aired in July 2015 and for which he was twice nominated for a SAFTA (South African Film and TV Award) in 2016. He is currently head writer on the 208 episode Mzansi Magic telenovela IsiThembiso. He directs TV commercials, and has recently completed his first feature documentary "GOLDBLATT" about legendary South African anti-apartheid photographer David Goldblatt.
